Dear Families,
Happy Sunny Sunday! Believe it or not, we've made it to the last week of school. It will be a busy and fun one. The week will go something like this: We'll be finishing up a few academic studies on Monday and Tuesday as we finish reading Maniac Magee and practice a few more coordinate graphs. We'll be watching the movie Gandhi this week as a follow up to our studies of revolutions/independence movements in other parts of the world. On Tuesday afternoon, from 2:40 to 3:00, we'll be holding a small 5th grade graduation ceremony outside the classrooms. Parents are welcome to join us. Wednesday is Field Day from 10am - 1pm. Students have free dress. They should wear clothing appropriate to play outside for the day. Closed-toed shoes are required. Wednesday will be full school day - students are dismissed at 3:10. Thursday is the last day of school. There will be an all-school assembly in the morning from 8:10 to 8:45. Parents are also welcome to attend. Thursday is a uniform day, but if students purchased the new ISM t-shirt, they can wear it on Thursday. Dismissal will be at 12:55. Yearbooks will be given out this week. I'll pass out the yearbooks as soon as they arrive to those that purchased or earned one. Last, thank you all for a great year with your child. This class have been super enthusiastic inquirers and fun to be with. I wish them all the very best for each of their coming years. Thank you, parents, for all your support throughout the year in all the many ways you have either helped the school, the class, or your child. You make a world of difference. Best wishes for a happy, fun and safe summer! Ms. Welsh

Thank you to our adopted Southwestern Airlines pilot Dan for helping us to learn about flight, flying careers, weather, physics and more! We really appreciate his time and energy to be with us for the last four weeks. You soar, Pilot Dan!!
Dear Families,
Happy Memorial Day! I hope you all have had a safe and fun 3-day weekend and have had a chance to pay your respects to all the veterans today. We are officially beginning to count down to the last days of school. We've been remarking in class lately about how fast this school year has gone and how much everyone has accomplished this year. There has been amazing growth for everyone in different ways. I'm very proud of them. This week will be a work week. On Tuesday, students will be doing their summative assessment for this final unit, How we organize ourselves. They'll be creating an infographic to communicate and demonstrate their understanding of the American Revolution. We'll continue reading Manic Magee this week to see how Jeffery and Grayson manage to live in a bandshell and how their friendship develops. We'll work on coordinate graphs this week as a preparation for 6th grade math. On Thursday morning, K-7th graders will "Step Up" to their next grade level to meet the teachers and learn about what to expect in the year ahead. Mrs. Madden set up a STEM Festival by Lawrence Hall of Science for Friday morning. Each class will get to spend about an hour at the festival learning about science, technology and math. Volunteers may still be needed. Please contact Mrs. Madden if you can help out. There will be a Recognition Recess on Tuesday for all that have received Learner Profile recognition cards. In addition, all students whose parents have completed the ISM survey will also be allowed to attend this special recess. Friday, June 2nd is a free dress day. Next week Highlights: Wednesday, June 7th is Field Day. It will be a full school day, students will be dismissed at 3:05. It is a free dress day that day. Students should wear "active" clothing and shoes that they would wear to PE. If you can help out that day, please contact Mr. Robby. Thursday, June 8th is the last day of school. It is a uniform day. Students will be dismissed at 12:55 that day. Please plan ahead for the time switch of those two days. There will be an all-school assembly that morning. All are welcome. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Best wishes, Ms. Welsh Happy Mother's Day!!
A heartfelt wish for a happy and pampered day to all you wonderful strong and beautiful mothers out there. May you feel the love from your family for all you do. Wishing you all the best. Congratulations to the 5th grade Mathletics team!!! ISM dis very well in the Mathletics competition yesterday at Hartnell College. Our 5th grade team of Ansh, Sindhu and Sneha not only won individual honors (Ansh and Sneha - honorable mentions and Sindhu - 2nd Place), they won 1st place for 5th grade!! I believe this is the first time and ISM team has won this honor. Thanks Ansh, Sindhu and Sneha for all your hard work in preparations and being there yesterday. We're (I'm) so proud of all of you! As we start winding down the year, the students' energy is ramping up. There is a lot of excitement in the air. We do still have a lot of learning to do. Please remind your child to stay focused and attentive in their studies. We'll be having a mid-module assessment in math this week on Wednesday or Thursday. The focus will be on determining the volume of different rectangular prisms. We'll review the unit in class before the assessment. We'll continue reading Maniac Magee this week. The story provides many examples of conflict the character is facing and allows us a chance to look at how conflicts can be resolved. We're looking at some of the literary devices the author uses to develop characters and offer great description to make the story come alive and invite us to care about the characters. The students will be learning about more of the events leading to the American Revolution this week and how the colonists decide they need to go about resolving the many conflicts they faced. Thank you to so many of you that have already signed up to volunteer for Field Day. Mr. Robby said our class has the most volunteers so far! There is another opportunity to get in some more volunteer hours on Friday, June 2nd. We will have an Engineering and Math Festival that day brought to us by the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley. Here is the link to sign up if you can help: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f084cafab2a1-engineering Happy Mother's Day and have a great week ahead! Ms. Welsh Dear Families,
I hope you're all enjoying the windy and sunny weekend in a variety of ways. Here are just a few reminders for the week ahead: We will have our last day of CAASPP testing on Monday (Tuesday if needed) in science. 5th and 8th graders take the science portion of the test every year. Please have your child get a good sleep and healthy breakfast before the test (as you do for most school days) to give them the best chance of doing their best. Students will finish their summative work for the book Flush which will be due on Monday. We'll continue learning about volume and capacity in math and compare cubic centimeters and millimeters through building structures and pouring liquids and working out application word problems. As we dig deeper into the events the led to the conflicts in the American Revolution, students will be doing some Reader's Theater reading, reading articles and watching short videos to help them understand this critical piece of American history. I wish you all a great week ahead. Ms. Welsh Dear Families,
