Dear Families,
I hope you are all enjoying a beautiful sunny weekend outdoors. Wow! It's amazing especially after the storms. Thank you to those of you who hosted Columbian students. They had a wonderful time and really enjoyed the interactions with our students and families. Congratulations to all the talented students out there. The talent show was very successful. Here's just a few things for the week ahead. One Tuesday, we'll head to the Santa Lucia Reserve in Carmel Valley for the morning to look at how energy is transferred in the riparian ecosystem there. Parent drivers, I will be sending you a note with details on when to meet. Students can wear free dress appropriate for hiking, with closed-toed shoes. They should bring a lunch and water bottle. Math We'll continue with interpreting fractions with division this week. UOI - Guided Inquiry Students will begin a guided inquiry this week. They will be brainstorming ideas to narrow down what they want to learn about first. These will be due on Feb. 8th.

Dear Families,
Happy rainy weekend! I hope everyone is either staying dry or having a great time splashing in puddles this weekend. It’s been an amazing amount of rain in much of California and a treat to hear the raindrops as one sleeps. Here are a few things for the week ahead: Math: The students will have an End-of-Module assessment for module 3 on Tuesday. We'll review the skills from the module tomorrow. Language Arts: As we come to the end of the book Every Soul a Star, students have already begun a book report project. These projects will be due on Wednesday this week. There will be time in class to work on projects on Monday and Tuesday. Santa Lucia Conservancy field trip: I've sent home a "release of liability" with the students on Friday which are required to go on the field trip. Please sign and return have them returned to school as soon as possible. There are 2 students who still need to also turn in their permission slips as well. We have more than enough drivers willing to do the field trip on Tuesday, Jan. 31st. Please let me know if you'd like to cancel. We will need about 6-7 drivers to make the trip happen. Friday is free dress. Have a great week! Dear Families,
I hope everyone is staying warm and dry out there or having a great time splashing in puddles! It's great to have the rain soaking up throughout the county. The forecast is for rain to continue throughout most days of the week. Students can wear rainboots and jackets to school, of course, but will need to have uniform shoes and jackets for the classroom. Overall, students did a great job on their summative assessments for the How We Express Ourselves unit. There were creative poems, artwork, writings and other forms presented on Friday. They will write a reflection of the unit tomorrow. We'll begin our next unit tomorrow on Sharing the Planet. Our focus will be on the transfer and change of energy and matter in ecosystems and other systems. The Central Idea for the unit is "Matter and energy exist in many forms and are changed, stored and used in many ways". The lines of inquiry are:
We'll continue working on the addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators this week in math. Students will continue reading Every Soul a Star. We're getting close to the end! A field trip to Santa Lucia Preserve in Carmel Valley is planned for the morning of Monday, January 30th. I'll send a permission slip home this week. Please fill it out and have your child return it as soon as possible. We will need driver/chaperones to make the trip happen. If you are able and available, we would appreciate your help. You can let me know of the form if you can drive. Have a great splashy week out there! Ms. Welsh Dear Families,
Happy New Year! I trust you all have had a nice holiday time together with fun and special memories throughout the last two weeks. It's difficult to get back into routines after a break, but I hope we can all get slowly back on track with the restart of school tomorrow. Here are just a few things for the short week ahead. We are at the end of our unit on How We Express Ourselves. Students will complete a summative assessment over the next two days as they create three different forms of expression in response to images we will give them. We'll finish up our study of figurative language this week with a review and a mini-assessment of the students' understanding. I will return the mid-module math assessments to the students tomorrow. Please review your child's work, sign the assessment and have them return it to school on Thursday. They will keep this in their portfolios for reference. We'll continue reading Every Soul A Star this week and next. Future Our next unit will be on Sharing the Planet with a focus on energy and matter transfer in ecosystems. The unit following that will be the exhibition unit. The students chose the topic of "Health" to focus their inquiries. If you have any articles or connections to this topic, please let me know. Students will be able to chose more specific topics within this area. We will be reaching out to the community to help the students learn as much as they can. Have a great rest of the week! |
