Dear families,
Happy drippy Sunday! I hope you all are enjoying the weekend maybe splashing in puddles and enjoying some of the Halloween festivities around the area. As you know, we start the week with Halloween. Students can wear a "base layer" for their costume (if they choose too dress up) to school. They will be changing into costumes at 1:20 or so for the parade starting at 1:40. After the parade, we'll return to the classroom for some snacks and activities or a movie until the end of the day. Students are not allowed to wear masks or have any "weapons" with the costumes at school. Please see email notes sent from school for further details. Thank you to those who have offered to send in snacks for tomorrow. Please be reminded ISM has a healthy snack policy. In math, we'll have a mid-module assessment on Wednesday. We'll review the skills in class and I'll give the students a review sheet to help study for the test. We'll continue reading the novel Every Soul a Star throughout the week. and students will have some literature work to do that goes along with the book. Groups have begun work on their guided inquiry assignment on the Earth's spheres. These projects are due on Friday. The description and rubric for the assignment are attached. Have a great week! Ms. Welsh Dear Families,
Happy Sunday! I hope you all are enjoying this beautiful fall weekend. Here's what we have going on this week: We continue with our studies on astronomy this week. We'll be looking more closely at how the orbit of the Earth affects our planet from daily patterns to yearly patterns and our weather and climate. The planetarium at Hartnell College is closed for field trip until January. There is an evening opportunity for families this coming Saturday night at the Fremont Peak Observatory outside of San Juan Baptista at 8:00pm. Here is the information for it. It would be cancelled if the weather would impede vision with the telescope. Please let me know if you will be attending. The novel we will be reading should be arriving this week. It's called Every Soul a Star by Wendy Mass. In math, we will continue working on multiplying decimals with whole numbers. Students are recommended to estimate the product first, so that they have a good idea of decimal placement. Practicing the standard algorithm (the way most adults learned to multiply) is important for all students. We'll also be working on measurement equivalents (1 meter = 100 cm, etc.) and using that information in multiplication word problems. Tuesday will be a "Mix It Up Lunch". In our case, 3 -5th grade students and teachers will be sitting with students from a mix of these grade levels rather than just our own grade level. Halloween is on the horizon. I haven't heard the details for that day for the school yet. If anyone would like to plan an activity for the class or would be willing to bring snacks after the parade, please let me know. We should have about an hour available. Have a great week, Ms. Welsh Dear Families,
A lovely Sunday afternoon to all of you! Here is just a quick update for the week ahead. Parent - Teacher Conferences continue this Wednesday afternoon. Here is the link to the schedule in case you need to look up the time of your conference. The time goes quickly (only 15 minutes), so please do your best to be on time. I will try to keep the conferences on time as well. In math, we'll continue work on the distributive and associative properties in finding the products of multi-digit numbers. Students will begin work on a narrative writing piece related to our unit this week. We'll continue learning about astronomy this week as well. We'll inquire into the meaning of a year, the phases of the moon and seasonal patterns. Friday after school, fall break begins. Students return to school on Wednesday, October 19th. I wish you all a safe and fun fall break. Best wishes, Ms. Welsh |
