Happy Beautiful Sunday!
I hope you all are out finding many ways to enjoy this beautiful weekend. We had a great time reading with our 1st grade buddies on the field on Friday. Thank you to Layla's mom who spent time with us on Friday morning to help us understand the effects of drugs on our health from a doctor's perspective. Here are a few things for this week ahead. Exhibition is the main focus of the week. We'll use as much time as we can to continue to work on gathering information for each of the group topics. I don't think I shared the topics covering in our class yet. Here is the list:
Ms. Beletti and I will be finalizing the format of the exhibition presentations this week. After spring break, students will be focusing on creating the presentations. Students are not required to work on their exhibition projects over the break, though they can if they want to. Once we return from break there will be about 1 1/2 weeks before the projects will be due in class (April 13th), so they can practice presenting and fine tune their projects for the final presentations on April 20th. On Tuesday, we'll attend an assembly on water and wise water use by the musical group called Zun Zun. We're looking forward to this informative and educational performance. Wednesday is Wacky Wednesday. The theme is Vacation Day. "Dress as if you are going on a vacation! (i.e. Tropical Vacation, Winter Vacation, Touring the City...)". We'll continue reading Flush this week. Students will be working on some comprehension and analysis for the chapters read. We will continue with math and focus on fraction and decimal multiplication as well as comparing numbers. There will also be spelling homework as usual each night with a test on Friday. Wishing you all a fun and restful spring break starting on Friday at 3:10pm (in case you're counting)! Ms. Welsh

Dear Families,
I hope your weekends are going well and you're enjoying a one more shot of rain and moisture this morning. Exhibition is gaining momentum in grade 5. We had very informative presentations this week. Dr Josephson, an ISM parent and board member, helped this students understand how the immune system works and fights disease. Taylor's mom was with us and brought her dental assistant, Theresa, to help the classes learn about dental health and it's role on healthcare. Andres and Emilio's dad gave us a great presentation about environmental hazards in the home and work place. It had the students looking around campus for hazards :). Thank you to all of you for helping us learn and understand more about different aspect of health. The students have all really benefited from this time together. Almost all the groups have met with their mentors for an initial meeting this week and will begin meeting on a weekly basis with them. So far, the mentors have had great reports about their meetings and the team they are working with. The mentors are an integral part of this process as they help to guide and encourage the group in their goals and process. We appreciate these ISM staff members giving up their prep time to do this for the classes. This week, we'll have a presentation from Layla's mom, a doctor, who will help students understand some of the medical side of health and healthcare. We're looking forward to her visit. Judah's aunt, a nurse and nursing instructor at MPC will also be with us soon as well. We'll continue with converting fractions and decimals and solving multi-step problems in in math. Reading over the word problems several times, it very important in understanding the question asked and the parameters involved. We'll continue reading Flush by Carl Haaison and students will have comprehension and analysis work for the each chapter. This Friday, March 10th, ISM will celebrate Read Across America Day. Student's can come to school in pajamas and will need to wear appropriate school footwear. Students may also bring a favorite book to read to their 1st grade buddies. We'll have a whole school read together on the lower playground at the end of the day. Have a great week ahead! Ms. Welsh |
AuthorThis is my tenth year at ISM and fifth year teaching 5th grade. I enjoy working with young people and being with my family. I love being outdoors in nature, on or in the ocean. I look for ways to continue learning and growing. Archives
