Dear Families,
Dear Families, Thank you to those who helped pick up trash and recycling in the community yesterday for Coastal Cleanup Day. It's amazing what the positive efforts of people can do to improve life for all. Many of our class members have made a goal for International Dot Day to pick up more trash this year. Thank you for supporting their efforts. This week is our last week of the Where we are in place and time unit. Student groups will be presenting their explorer projects tomorrow. We'll have about 30 minutes with the computers before presentation time to allow the groups to practice their presentations together. We'll have a summative assessment for the unit on Wednesday and Thursday. This summative will assessment the students' understanding of the central idea and lines of inquiry. Ms. Beletti and I will have a Professional Development day on Tuesday together to plan the next couple units. We will have substitute teachers each class that day. Wednesday is Wacky Wednesday. The theme is Twin/Triplet/or more day. Students can plan out an outfit, color scheme or more with others. If a student chooses not to participate, they should wear the ISM uniform. We will have an "End of Module Math Assessment" this week. We'll review the concepts and skills beforehand in class. I apologize for the false alarm of starting spelling last week. The students were concerned about getting their projects done last week. We will begin spelling this week with a test on Friday. Have a great week! Ms. Welsh Good Sunday Morning to all!
I hope your weekends are going along well. Thank you to those who were able to help out at the Saturday Work Day yesterday. It sounds as if a lot of tasks were accomplished for the school. It all adds up! Here are some of the highlights of what's going on this week for us in 5A: Monday (tomorrow) is Grandparent/Grand Friend's Day at ISM. Guests should go to the multiuse room first for some coffee, snacks and a short orientation (7:45 - 8:40). Then guests will go to classrooms to visit their grandchildren/friends from 8:45 to 9:30. We look forward to sharing a little of the morning with them. On Tuesday, we'll have an all-school assembly on International Dot Day. All students and staff will then make a pledge and create dots to describe their pledge for the year ahead. We hope that you will support your child in their goals for this. Masks: Our class began the first stage of decorating their masks on Friday. Many students took them home to complete the decorations and some were left in class to dry. The completed masks will be due in class on Wednesday and students will present them to the rest of the class at that time. We'll begin a guided inquiry on explorers and exploration this week. Teams will work together on different explorers learning their motivations for exploration, routes of travel and the effects of their explorations. We'll also begin working on spelling words this week. Students will be given about 15 words to study throughout the week and test on Friday. I should have all the mid-unit math assessments scored by tomorrow. Students will bring them home for you to look over and sign. They should return them to class to keep in their portfolios. Upcoming: Parent-Teacher Conferences will be on two upcoming Wednesday afternoons - September 28th and October 5th. I'll set up a SignUp Genius form for you to fill out for a time that works for you. I look forward to meeting with each of you then. Have a great week ahead! Ms. Welsh |
AuthorThis is my tenth year at ISM and fifth year teaching 5th grade. I enjoy working with young people and being with my family. I love being outdoors in nature, on or in the ocean. I look for ways to continue learning and growing. Archives
