Dear 5B Families,
I hope you all enjoyed your three day weekend. We have one more full week ahead of us before another extended break from November 23-27 for Thanksgiving. This first term has flown by! Class pictures On Tuesday, November 15 (this week) 5th grade school pictures will be taken. Please make sure your child comes in complete uniform for the photos. UOI This week is our last week of the How the World Works unit. Students will have a summative assessment project this week to make a short video with a small group about what they've learned in this unit. We'll be using a program called ClipChamp and will have time to explore how it works in class. Language Arts We'll continue reading Every Soul a Star throughout the week and most likely will extend the book to the next unit. The class is really enjoying the book. We will continue with spelling this week. Students' spelling words will come from math, our class novel and words they misspell in their own writing (personalized spelling words). In addition we will continue with out current writing project, writing a research report. Math Students took their math summative assessment last week and will be moving on to our next unit which will start off with operations with decimals. The Wacky Wednesday that was scheduled for this Wednesday has been changed to Wednesday, Nov. 30th so that the middle school students weren't wearing their "Lazy Sunday" wear for school photos. This Friday, November 18 is a Free Dress Friday. Wishing you a wonderful week! Warm regards, Ms. Beletti

Dear 5B families,
I hope you are doing well. As you know, this week is a 4-day week. Friday is a holiday for Veteran's Day to honor those who serve and served our country in the military. Math We will continue to practice additive volume this week. Language Arts There just be 10 spelling words this week due to the shorter number of school days. The spelling test will be on Thursday. We will practice writing thesis statements as we continue to study and write our own research papers using the information and data gathered during the guided inquiry. We'll continue reading our novel Every Soul a Star this week with students working on comprehension of the story. UOI Groups will complete their presentations of their spheres of the Earth guided inquiry. After the completion of the presentation, students will learn about matter this week. There is a talk on Wednesday evening that goes with our unit if anyone can make it. (I have a workshop in Salinas I am attended that night.) It looks to be interesting: Nov 2016 Community Night With the Library NASA Astronaut Capt. Daniel W. Bursch Instructor Space Systems Academic Group Naval Postgraduate School Monterey Wed, Nov 9 at 7 pm Carpenter Hall at Sunset Center, 9th & Mission, Carmel Join Astronaut Daniel Bursch for a talk about space. Bursch had four spaceflights, the first three of which were Space Shuttle missions lasting 10 to 11 days each. His fourth and final spaceflight was a long-duration stay aboard the International Space Station as a crew member of Expedition 4, which lasted 196 days, setting a new record for the longest duration spaceflight for an American astronaut. Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead! Warm regards, Ms. Beletti Dear 5B families,
I hope this email finds you well. As you know, we start the week with Halloween. Students can wear a "base layer" for their costume (if they choose too dress up) to school. They will be changing into costumes at 1:20 or so for the parade starting at 1:40. After the parade, we'll return to the classroom for some snacks, storytelling and a movie until the end of the day. Students are not allowed to wear masks or have any "weapons" with the costumes at school. Please see email notes sent from school for further details. Thank you to those who have offered to send in snacks for tomorrow. Math In math, we will continue to look at volume this week. Specifically, looking at additive volume of rectangular prisms. Language Arts We'll continue reading the novel Every Soul a Star throughout the week. and students will have some literature work to do that goes along with the book. UOI Groups have begun work on their guided inquiry assignment on the Earth's spheres. These projects are due on Friday. Wishing you all a wonderful week! Warm regards, Ms. Beletti Dear 5B families,
I hope you are doing well! Here's what we have going on this week: UOI We continue with our studies on astronomy this week. We'll be looking more closely at how the orbit of the Earth affects our planet from daily patterns to yearly patterns and our weather and climate. The planetarium at Hartnell College is closed for field trip until January. There is an evening opportunity for families this coming Saturday night at the Fremont Peak Observatory outside of San Juan Baptista at 8:00pm. Here is the information for it. It would be cancelled if the weather would impede vision with the telescope. Language Arts The novel we will be reading should be arriving this week. It's called Every Soul a Star by Wendy Mass. We will also continue with spelling this week. Math We will look at volume this week. Students will learn about the formula for volume and apply it to 3-dimensional shape (rectangular prisms) they find in everyday life. Tuesday will be a "Mix It Up Lunch". In our case, 3 -5th grade students and teachers will be sitting with students from a mix of these grade levels rather than just our own grade level. This Friday is Free Dress Friday. Halloween is on the horizon. The administration sent out emails last week regarding the parade and costume guidelines. Following the parade we will have a class Halloween party where students can share healthy snacks they bring in while reading the stories they wrote around a mock camp fire. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Wishing you all a wonderful week! Warm regards, Ms. Beletti Dear 5B families,
I hope you are all doing well. Thank you to all who helped out for the special Saturday Work Day yesterday and participated in the Fall Around the World celebration. It was great to see so many families and cultures come together. Here are just a few reminders for the week ahead: UOI We will begin our second unit, How the World Works, this week. We will be inquiring into astronomy, our solar system, the different spheres of the Earth and learning what matter is. We welcome any ideas of learning experiences and field trips you might know about that would enhance or complement our unit. Language Arts We will finish reading our class novel, Two Old Women, and students will complete a summative assessment. Students are writing their own narrative as we make our way through the steps of the writing process. Math Students will have a summative assessment that will cover decimals and coordinate plane before moving on to our next mathematical concept. Parent-Teacher Conferences start this Monday morning. Thank you for signing up. If you have been unable to do so, please contact me and I can make arrangements for you to do so. Students are welcome at the meeting as we discuss their learning and goals. Conferences will start with a discussion about what you feel are your child’s strengths and areas of growth are (please reflect on this question prior to the conference). Thursday morning we will attend a concert from some of the members of the Carmel Bach Festival thanks to the connection from one of our board members, Cris Cabanillas. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to meeting with you this week and next week during Parent-Teacher conferences. Wishing you all a wonderful week! Ms. Beletti Dear 5B families,
