Dear Families,
I hope you all have had a great three-day weekend this last weekend and were able to have a little more time together as a family as well as time to honor our veteran's last Friday. Thank you to all of you who got up very early today to help at the half marathon's aide station. It was very uplifting to hear your cheers and get a quick drink of water (I know I saw Liliana, Taylor, Montana and their families along with many others.). You lightened my step as I'm sure it did for all the runners and walkers out there on this beautiful day. Bravo to all! As you can see, I am trying a new way to send you updates through the ManageBac website. I hope it works for everyone. Please shoot me an email if you are having trouble viewing it. On Tuesday this week 3rd - 5th grade school pictures will be taken. Please make sure your child comes in complete uniform for the photos. This week is our last week of the How the World Works unit. Students will have a summative assessment project this week to make a short video with a small group about what they've learned in this unit. We'll be using a program called ClipChamp and will have time to explore how it works in class. Spelling will be back to normal this week with 15 words. We're still working on Greek and Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes. We'll continue reading Every Soul a Star throughout the week and most likely will extend the book to the next unit. The class is really enjoying the book. In math, we'll continue to work on division of whole numbers and decimals with remainders. The Wacky Wednesday that was scheduled for this Wednesday has been changed to Wednesday, Nov. 30th so that the middle school students weren't wearing their "Lazy Sunday" wear for school photos. (Sorry, middle schoolers!) Enjoy your week! Ms. Welsh

Happy "Fall Back" Sunday morning! I hope you all are enjoying an extra hour today as we set back the clocks for daylight savings. It was great to see some of our 5th graders sing yesterday for a performance with the Bach Music Festival in Seaside. The students did great and the overall performance was excellent. Bravo! As you know, this week is a 4-day week. Friday is a holiday for Veteran's Day to honor those who serve and served our country in the military. I'll have all the recent math assessments ready to return to students tomorrow. Please take a few minutes to look over their work, sign the assessment and have your child return it to class for their portfolio. Most everyone did well though there are areas where additional practice is needed for some. We'll continue with division this week and working on word problems to apply our learning. There just be 10 spelling words this week due to the shorter number of school days. The spelling test will be on Thursday. Most of the groups were able to present their sphere of the Earth guided inquiry on Friday except one. We will have that presentation and learn about matter this week. There is a talk on Wednesday evening that goes with our unit if anyone can make it. (I have a workshop in Salinas I am attended that night.) It looks to be interesting. Nov 2016 Community Night With the Library NASA Astronaut Capt. Daniel W. Bursch Instructor Space Systems Academic Group Naval Postgraduate School Monterey Wed, Nov 9 at 7 pm Carpenter Hall at Sunset Center, 9th & Mission, Carmel Join Astronaut Daniel Bursch for a talk about space. Bursch had four spaceflights, the first three of which were Space Shuttle missions lasting 10 to 11 days each. His fourth and final spaceflight was a long-duration stay aboard the International Space Station as a crew member of Expedition 4, which lasted 196 days, setting a new record for the longest duration spaceflight for an American astronaut. We'll continue reading our novel Every Soul a Star this week with students working on comprehension of the story. Have a great week and 3-day weekend ahead! Ms. Welsh |
