Dear Families,
This busy time of year always makes it challenging to keep the studentsn moving ahead in their studies. This week before the holidays is definitely one of the most challenging. We do, however, have several great things planned that I hope will give eveyone things to look forward to. Here are some things to keep in mind for the week: Monday: Secret Snowflake begins on Moday and goes through to Friday. The students have all picked a name of someone in class they will do a little something for each day (very small acts of kindness). On Friday, they will give them a little something more and reveal their identity to their secret snowflake. REMINDER: This is not something we want students to spend money on. It's just a way of giving of oneself - a nice note, an extra pencil a homemade bookmark or something of that sort. Tuesday: Our class will be going on the field trip to MPC Art Gallery. Parent drivers will need to be at the classroom at 9:00am with their current license, insurance and car registration for me to check the dates. I will contact all the drivers separately to give more detailed information. Thursday: Poet Patrice Vecchioni will be with us to help us learn about how we can express ourselves through poetry through a workshop she'll be conducting with both classes. Friday: Secret Snowflake - The Big Reveal. Students will reveal their identiries to their secret snowflakes. We will have a little breakfast holiday celebration. If anyone can provide a breakfast item (fruit, muffin, bagel, juice), please let me know. Oh yes, and then there's math. We'll continue working on addition and finding equivalent fractions this week. The students should be ready to have a mid-module assessment on Friday. The class will finish and present their guided inquiries on forms of expression on Tuesday. Happy and safe holidays to one and all! Ms. Welsh

Dear Families, A beautiful Sunday morning to you! First, I'd like to thank the Bishop family (Holly, Courtney and Ashley) for joining me yesterday at the food packaging event for Stop Hunger Now. While packaging food for people that aren't able to get enough nutrients in a day is a small drop in the problem, raising awareness of this issue is vitally important. It was good to work with other community members in creating 10,000 packages of dried food (soy, rice and vegetables) to be sent to places and people in need. Reminders: It's a busy time of year for everyone with a variety of holiday events and other things going on in all your lives. Here are a few reminders: This Thursday, December 8th is Fall Arts Night for grades 5 - 8th. Students need to be in the classroom by at least 6:15. The program will start in the mulituse room at 6:30. The Scholastic Book Fair will continue until this Thursday afternoon. Students can visit the fair before school and during recess if it's open. Our class voted to have a Secret Snowflake gift exchange during the week of December 12 - 16. They will choose another student's name out of a basket and do something for that person each day. On Friday the 16th, we'll have a gift exchange (and maybe a few breakfast food items) and reveal who had who for Secret Snowflake. The idea is not to spend a lot or any money, but to think of kind acts we can do for one another. We will start a new math unit this week on adding and subtracting fractions. You can find the parent newsletter for this unit here: http://www.berkeleyschools.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Grade-5-Mod-3-FamilyLetter.pdf The class is working on a short assignment for our unit on How we express ourselves as a response to what they think and feel about plastic trash. They've come up with a lot of creative ways to express themselves from song to poem, signs and art. We have planned for a local poet, Patrice Vecchioni, to come to both fifth grade classes on December 15th to work with the students on imagery and poetry. We look forward to working with her. As always, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Kind regards, Ms. Welsh |
