Dear 5B families,
I hope you are all doing well. Thank you to all who helped out for the special Saturday Work Day yesterday and participated in the Fall Around the World celebration. It was great to see so many families and cultures come together. Here are just a few reminders for the week ahead: UOI We will begin our second unit, How the World Works, this week. We will be inquiring into astronomy, our solar system, the different spheres of the Earth and learning what matter is. We welcome any ideas of learning experiences and field trips you might know about that would enhance or complement our unit. Language Arts We will finish reading our class novel, Two Old Women, and students will complete a summative assessment. Students are writing their own narrative as we make our way through the steps of the writing process. Math Students will have a summative assessment that will cover decimals and coordinate plane before moving on to our next mathematical concept. Parent-Teacher Conferences start this Monday morning. Thank you for signing up. If you have been unable to do so, please contact me and I can make arrangements for you to do so. Students are welcome at the meeting as we discuss their learning and goals. Conferences will start with a discussion about what you feel are your child’s strengths and areas of growth are (please reflect on this question prior to the conference). Thursday morning we will attend a concert from some of the members of the Carmel Bach Festival thanks to the connection from one of our board members, Cris Cabanillas. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to meeting with you this week and next week during Parent-Teacher conferences. Wishing you all a wonderful week! Ms. Beletti

Guests should go to the multiuse room first for some coffee, snacks and a short orientation (7:45 - 8:40). Then guests will go to classrooms to visit their grandchildren/friends from 8:45 to 9:30. We look forward to sharing a little of the morning with them. International Dot Day - Tuesday, September 13, we'll have an all-school assembly on International Dot Day. All students and staff will think about how they can make their own mark. We encourage you to discuss this and support your child in their ideas for making their mark. UOI - Mask making - All students completed their masks and we will begin decorating our masks this week. The completed masks will be due in class on Friday and students will present them to the rest of the class at that time. Students will continue their group inquiries on their topic of choice. Later this week we will start inquiring about explorers and exploration. Teams will work together on different explorers learning their motivations for exploration, routes of travel and the effects of their explorations. Language Arts - We'll also begin working on spelling words this week. Students will be given about 15 words to study throughout the week and test on Friday. Spelling words will be based on words from our unit of inquiry, class novel, math vocabulary as well as students' writing. In addition, we will continue reading our class novel, Two Old Women. Math - We will continue to study coordinate planes this week, as well as begin to analyze patterns and relationships between the two numbers that make up the ordered pair. Parent-Teacher Conferences - Conferences will be on two upcoming Wednesday afternoons - September 28th and October 5th. I'll set up a SignUp Genius form for you to fill out for a time that works for you. I look forward to meeting with each of you then. Volunteering - If you are interested in chaperoning on future field trips and are not on the approved drivers list, please talk to Diana Silva in the front office. She can give you some information about where to get fingerprinted and take the online driver's test. Mrs. Welsh and I are currently exploring some possible field trips for upcoming units.
